Osmosis – a critical issue in yacht sale

One of the most important concerns when buying or selling a yacht is the presence of osmosis in the hull.

Osmosis occurs when water (usually seawater) penetrates the membrane (gel-coat and laminate) of the hull. It is often called the “plastic disease.” Since around 90% of yachts are made of fiberglass, any sign of osmosis is cause for concern.

Although osmosis rarely leads to serious structural damage, over time it weakens the laminate, making timely repairs essential—especially if it spreads.
Osmosis is often related to the manufacturing process, but maintenance and care also significantly influence its occurrence and development.

Why is osmosis a concern?

The main reasons for concern are the high cost of repair and the risk of recurrence.

Repair costs depend on the size of the affected area and the depth to which water has penetrated the laminate. Extensive cases affecting the entire underwater hull are rare but the most expensive

Decades ago, osmosis often recurred after repairs. Today, modern materials and technologies allow for permanent repairs when high-quality products and professional supervision are used.

How to identify osmosis?

The most common visible sign is blisters under the hull surface, but they are not always present.

Osmosis can exist without visible signs, so a visual inspection alone is not sufficient—it is only the first step in assessing a vessel’s condition.
